We are having an HDSA trivia fundraiser on Saturday, September 02 at East End Backyard from 6-11pm.
Although the rest of the world honors workers on May 1st (May Day), USA & Canada honor workers on the first Monday of September annually. This year, we are having a socialist trivia event for the fundraiser as a fun political education event- this is a way to raise awareness for all members from all backgrounds, graduate degree in political science needed to participate. We encourage everyone to bring their family and friends to this event.
Why does HDSA need to have a fundraiser?
HDSA is member funded & does not accept any non-profit or other shady money. This allows us to dictate our activities without being beholden to an interest which might conflict with our principles as socialist. It also means that sometimes we need to ask members of our chapter to donate what is financially feasible in order to continue the chapter functioning.
What is this money used for?
To start with, the chapter was able to provide some funding assistance to convention delegates. The money also funds our campaigns like Prop A ballot initiative, Starbucks solidarity, Justice for Jalen, political prisoner solidarity, and YDSA. It covers chapter necessities, such as all of the online expenses (Zoom, google, website, Shopify, etc.), general meeting & other activity space rentals, food, water & drinks for members attending events, storage rental, merchandise, and equipment (like the much needed projector).
What ISN’T the money used for? Although HDSA is a 501c4 non-profit corporation, our SC is entirely volunteer based & do not receive any payment for their labor. The working group co-chairs & campaign leaders are volunteers as well- there’s no secretive Soros cash paying out leadership.
This work is important- we all agree that capitalism isn’t functioning to support the working class. DSA is the largest socialist organization in the USA & we have the potential to make positive material changes that benefit the working class. This is why donating to HDSA is so important- we are member funded & member driven. Let’s keep working together to make a better world- it is possible with our hard work.

Join us this Sunday for a special and momentous Houston DSA event!
First, we’ll have a panel discussion featuring our local delegates to the 2023 DSA National Convention, who’ll tell us about all they experienced and learned among the gathering of socialist comrades. We’ll learn what was passed, what failed, and what the direction will be for the largest socialist organization in the country!
Additionally, we’ll have an endorsement discussion and vote for congressional candidate Pervez Agwan! This endorsement had to be postponed due to restrictions at the venue for our general meeting. We hope you’ll come out and add your voice and vote!
We are working to make our meetings more accessible; after RSVPing, you can access a Google form for Carpool coordination, mutual aid support for gas, and accessibility needs.
If you prefer to join the meeting online, follow the instructions after RSVPing for Zoom registration.
This event is open to members and non-members alike! **Please note: You must be a member in good standing in order to participate in the endorsement discussion and vote portion of the meeting. You can visit dsausa.org/join to become a member today. If you’re a member and would like to check on the status of your membership, please reach out to us at info@houstondsa.org.
