Yesterday, HDSA members showed up in solidarity with the @ilasagcd dockworkers on day one of their strike on USMX. 45,000 workers are on strike for the first time since 1977, reminding bosses, who have never set foot on a port, that workers can and will demand respect and their rights to the profits made by their labor. We support ILA members’ demands against automation for future workers and the greed of the shipping industry. The rank and file’s message is clear: if capitalists price gauging at USMX want a fight, it’s a war they’re going to get!
We will always support the right to strike and extend solidarity to workers taking aim at our one shared enemy—the capitalist class. The same capitalist class that rules our two-party system and justifies impoverished wages is the same class that profits from “israel’s” genocide of Palestinians and the settler-colonial war in Palestine and Lebanon. As this strike coincides with one year since “israel’s” escalation of genocide in Gaza, we support the rank-and-file members putting their livelihoods on the line during this strike while also calling for union leadership to end arms shipments to “israel.”
The power of organized workers to bring capitalist’s cash factories to a halt is powerful. Every day that USMX refuses to meet workers’ demands costs them $4.4 billion. This same power can also put a halt on weapons shipments to “israel,” their ongoing genocide in Palestine, and their war of aggression against Lebanon.
To support the ILA during their strike, join the picket at the Port of Houston Authority! Donations of snacks, water, and food directly to the picket will be appreciated.
