Our Vote Our Metro

In 2019, by two-thirds majority, Harris County voters approved funding for METRONext, a transformative plan to address the region’s congestion and population growth. The plan includes a 75-mile BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) network, improved frequency and travel times, light rail extension to Hobby Airport, improved bus stops and sidewalks, enhanced ADA compliance, and more.

Unfortunately, under Mayor Whitmire and his appointed METRO Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock, a CenterPoint executive, voter-approved METRONext plans (like the University Corridor BRT) are being shelved as the agency significantly increases METRO Police funding and expands microtransit (ridesharing) services by Evolve, a nonprofit led by CenterPoint and Shell executives, that are non-ADA compliant, have no air conditioning, and are operated by non-unionized drivers.

Transit is climate policy, but it is also related to working-class needs. As the price of living (rent, cars, insurance, groceries) continues to increase, Houston deserves a reliable and affordable transit system that connects our communities.

We demand that Mayor Whitmire and Chair Brock respect the will of voters and build what we voted for!
