2018 Primary Roundup

·

The 2018 Democratic Primary is behind us (or at least the first round, anyway) and while our endorsed candidates met with varying levels of success, we couldn’t be prouder of all of them. Here’s how election night went:

Franklin Bynum avoided a primary challenge, and therefore as of last night is the 2018 Democratic nominee for Harris County Criminal Court 8! Additionally, the Republican incumbent in this race, Jay Karahan, was unseated by a challenger to his right, Dan Simons, so come November, the choice facing voters could not be clearer: Simons, an inexperienced prosecutor with a history of questionable judgement, or Franklin, a defense attorney and former public defender, who understands firsthand the challenges facing working people and people of color in our courts.

Fran Watson and Danyahel (Danny) Norris both made their respective runoffs. Fran will face Rita Lucido in the runoff for SD-17, and Danny Norris will face off against Prince E. Bryant II in the runoff for Harris County Department of Education trustee, Precinct 1, Place 6.

Ali Khorasani, running for Texas’ 2nd Congressional District, unfortunately did not make his runoff. While the challenges of being a first-time candidate with low name recognition are always difficult to overcome, we are extremely proud of each vote we did earn — every single one one a direct result of voter outreach, and another step on the way to building community power.

The runoff is scheduled for Tuesday, May 22. If you’re interested in helping elect these great progressive candidates, sign up below!
