Houston DSA Night School

This Spring, join Houston DSA to learn about socialist politics and theory and how we can build a world that is better for the many, not just the few.

Capitalism touches all aspects of our existence, alienating us from one another and preventing us from living more satisfying and fulfilling lives. But if we want to build a world that is both more just and more egalitarian, we are going to have to do better—we’re going to have to fight for socialism.

If you are interested in learning more about left politics, history and theory—and like what you hear from socialist politicians such as Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezjoin Houston DSA this February through May for a series of eight topical, biweekly discussions that examine a number of key areas—from labor to socialist feminism to economics and more—from a socialist perspective.

You can scroll down for more information about each of the 2020 Night School sessions, including a few suggested preliminary readings for each to read at your convenience.  The Night School is free and open to both DSA members and non-members of all ages. You’re welcome to attend as few or as many sessions as you can make, as each will be largely self-contained.  All levels of background and interest are welcome. Child-watch will also be available if needed.

For more information, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at reading@houstondsa.org.  We hope to see you there!

Night School: Internationalism & Imperialism

Harris County AFL-CIO Council

From the first moment Columbus set sail in the direction of the “New World,” to the ongoing Syrian Civil War, the entire history of the capitalist epoch has been defined by imperialist activity. Night School: Socialist Feminism

Harris County AFL-CIO Council

Socialists have fought for decades to create a more equal society and uplift the poor and the powerless. Like Marxism, socialist feminism recognized the oppressive structure of a capitalist society. Night School: Labor

Houston Federation of Teachers Union Hall

Due to its role in capitalism, the labor movement has long been the centerpiece of Leftist politics. Labor struggles in previous years, both successes and failures, provide valuable lessons for future struggles.  For more than a century, unions were at the core of the socialist movement, a fact confirmed by the many ways capitalists attacked […]
