Reading Group: The Wretched of the Earth, Chapter One

October 5, 2020 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

For the month of October, the Houston DSA Reading Group will be scheduled a little differently. We will be reading The Wretched of the Earth by Franz Fanon. But, instead of reading a couple of chapters every week, we will be meeting every Monday and discussing one chapter each meeting.

So, for our first meeting on October 5th at 7pm, make sure to read chapter one, and for the second meeting October 12th, read chapter two, etc. There are five chapters, so the final meeting will be November 2. Recaps and detailed notes will be provided, so you can attend even if you miss a session!

As once-colonized African countries struggled for independence, and African-Americans struggled for civil rights, Fanon articulated a unifying analysis. Imperialism dehumanizes us all. Published in 1961 in the midst of a global reorganization of power, Fanon encouraged revolutionaries to think beyond the categories we inherited from colonial elites (categories like racial groups and nations) to envision and create a more humane use of power. He sought liberation, not just from colonial armies, but from the internalized psychological effects of imperialism: the belief that some people are inferior to others.

The Houston DSA Reading Group is open to members and non-members alike. We strive to be accessible to all attendees regardless of background knowledge or expertise. If you are unable to afford the book, contact us for a non-distributional copy. See you there!
