May Day Celebration
April 30 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Join us Sunday, April 30th at 1pm for a celebration of May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day! We will be hosting a potluck at Hermann Park, so bring your favorite foods or nonalcoholic beverages, and recognize the gains we have made as a working class and what we still have before us.
After you RSVP, you will see the link to a Google sheet where you can comment what food, nonalcoholic beverages, supplies, games you would like to bring. We will keep updating the Google sheet!
While Americans usually recognize Labor Day in September, May 1st has a radical tradition as a workers’ holiday. It marks the anniversary of the Haymarket Riot, where eight anarchists were convicted of conspiracy under flimsy evidence after an unknown assailant threw a bomb at the police. The workers were rallying for an eight hour work day, a struggle that feels eerily familiar to millions of Americans who must work multiple jobs or overtime in order to afford rapidly rising costs of housing, education, and health care. We aren’t the first to engage in struggle, and can look to our predecessors for guidance and inspiration.
Look for us west of Miller Outdoor Theater (if you’re looking at a map), we’ll have our banner and flag so you can’t miss us!
