Reading Group: The Wretched of the Earth, Chapter Three
October 19 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
We continue our discussion of The Wretched of the Earth by Franz Fanon, this week covering Chapter Three. Remember, we will be meeting every Monday and discussing one chapter each meeting, so make sure to read Chapter Four for next week. Recaps and detailed notes will be provided, so you can attend even if you miss a session!
As once-colonized African countries struggled for independence, and African-Americans struggled for civil rights, Fanon articulated a unifying analysis. Imperialism dehumanizes us all. Published in 1961 in the midst of a global reorganization of power, Fanon encouraged revolutionaries to think beyond the categories we inherited from colonial elites (categories like racial groups and nations) to envision and create a more humane use of power. He sought liberation, not just from colonial armies, but from the internalized psychological effects of imperialism: the belief that some people are inferior to others.
The Houston DSA Reading Group is open to members and non-members alike. We strive to be accessible to all attendees regardless of background knowledge or expertise. If you are unable to afford the book, contact us for a non-distributional copy. See you there!
