Houston Tx 77009
Join us at this month’s Houston DSA Ecosocialist WG meeting to discuss Nonviolent Direct Action and how it’s used to create social change followed by planning for the next Fair Food Program Wendy’s Boycott action.
This meeting is going to be a lot more structured than previous ones because it’ll be organized to follow a mini nonviolent direct action workshop. If you’re interested in helping to co-facilitate send us a message!
Changing the location of our meeting so that we can attend a TCEQ public hearing on a new concrete mix plant that is requesting a permit to open in Near Northside.
A few key points to consider when writing up your oral or written comment:
-sanding, grinding, or cutting concrete can also release large amounts of dust containing high levels of crystalline silica. Prolonged or repeated exposure can lead to a disabling and often fatal lung disease called silicosis. Some studies also indicate a link between crystalline silica exposure and lung cancer.
-exposure to cement dust can irritate eyes, nose, throat and the upper respiratory system. Skin contact may result in moderate irritation to thickening/cracking of skin to severe skin damage from chemical burns.
-noise pollution, concrete mix plants are extremely loud and are given license by the state to operate around the clock.
-Houston chronicle reported last year that Houston has 188 concrete batch plants, more than any other county in Texas. They are generally clustered in POC communities.
Environmental Racism and Classism:
Afterwards we can discuss the topics of our own meeting and if anyone likes we can plan to get together sooner than Aug 20th(would be next meeting).
